Oscillator 2010 (listen here)
Multi- variable oscillator built around the
image of the last supper.
Features:
Three oscillator circuits. Switchable Light Dependant Resistor (LDR) used to control pitch of oscillator two.
Built-in radio transmitter
with a common AM radio used as an amplifier device. Also able to mix in radio sounds with those produced by oscillator (karaoke feature)
Volume control, modulation level, switchable on/off for each oscillator.
Change-over switch to allow two pitches to be set on different potentiometers
Functions: An internal oscillator controls the tempo of the electronic selector switch which selects and outputs sound from one of five 1/4" jack sockets inputs. As the sequencer operates each input channel is selected one at a time in a looping fashion.
The sequencer is built into a vintage super 8mm camera case
The five inputs can be any conventional electric instrument - guitars etc, or tape recorders, dictorfones or radios tuned to spoken-word channels
A red L.E.D. light shows which channel is currently selected
As you can imagine the sequencer produces a 5 beat rhythm rather than a 4/4 - this is one of its signitures
Electronic circuits made from scratch, from adapted kits
or from re-wired circuit-bending 'ready mades'. Oscillators and sequencers
created from the NE555 silicon chip, where the emphasis is on allowing chance and unpredictable pitches to enter the sound, scraping white noise and crackle from a second-hand, and well used, potentiometer, a signal diode becoming white noise generator when placed in reverse polarity by accident. The approach is experimental and practical - closer to the techniques of Edison perhaps, the trial and error approach, rather than Nicola Tesla, who used dry reason and mental visualisation to develop his inventions. Tesla, however, is the greater of the influences. Research through the patents office reveal a distinct esoteric side to some of the inventions Tesla was proposing: devices to intercept signals from Mars, voices from disembodied spirits and an obsession with the power of different frequencies.
Made with the
fascination of circuits when pushed to the extremes of their functions,
on the edges of their machine-like logic:
a light switch positioned
between on and off creates an arcing, seemingly random flicker of the lamp.
I once lived in a haunted house in Hackney E8, a light bulb fitting hung over my bed would often arc and flicker drawing attention to a conversation or thought I was having at that moment, even adding comment it would seem at times…
Roulette wheels made from kits are re-used in another context as
random divinity selectors, whilst a further melding of religion and technology produced a series of electronic coin operated shrines, some of which
feature a form of radio-mancy, fortune telling via the sequenced or random selection of snippets of talk-back radio and spoken word stations - eerily
providing 'messages' to the seeker at the drop of a coin, a passing of silver over the palm, messages which come from beyond the sum of its mundane parts
a form of alchemy created from broken, discarded machines and techno-art from recycled waste.
